Women of Al-Ma’afer Victims of Saudi Bombing: Civilian Bloodshed in Full View of the World

Entesaf Organization Condemns the Targeting of a Civilian Home in Al-Ma’afer and Calls for Accountability for Those Responsible.

Entesaf Organization for Women and Child Rights strongly condemns the horrific crime committed by Saudi military aircraft, which targeted a civilian home in Al-Ma’afer District, Taiz Governorate, resulting, according to an initial toll, in the killing of three women and an elderly man and the injury of three other civilians.

The organization considers the targeting of a home sheltering civilians, resulting in the killing and injury of women and elderly persons, a grave violation of the rules governing the protection of civilians. Entesaf emphasizes that international humanitarian law prohibits directing attacks against the civilian population and civilian objects. Article 51 of Additional Protocol I provides for the general protection of the civilian population. International humanitarian law also provides protection for women, elderly persons, and other groups particularly vulnerable to systematic attacks.

The organization warns of the continued Saudi aggression and blockade imposed on the Yemeni people for 12 years, and the resulting and ongoing threats to the lives of civilians, as well as the worsening humanitarian conditions caused by such crimes, particularly among women. According to the organization, more than 6,000 women have been killed or injured since the beginning of the war on Yemen.

Entesaf Organization calls for accountability for grave violations of international humanitarian law and stresses that those responsible for such violations must not be allowed to escape justice.

The organization further calls for the protection of civilians and civilian objects, strict adherence to the principles of distinction and proportionality, the provision of urgent medical care to the injured, and the protection of victims’ families’ rights to truth, remedy, and reparation.

Entesaf renews its call on the United Nations and relevant international human rights bodies to document this crime and other violations targeting civilians in Yemen and to take the necessary legal measures concerning the Saudi aggression and its affiliated forces.

Entesaf Organization for Women and Child Rights further stresses that civilian lives are not merely numbers, and that protecting women, children, elderly persons, and all civilians is a legal and moral obligation that must not be diminished under any pretext.
