The Entesaf Organization for Women and Children’s Rights stated that World Teachers’ Day (October 5), which is supposed to be an occasion for appreciation and celebration, clashes with a tragic reality in Yemen and the Gaza Strip.
In a statement received by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), the organization explained that the educational process, teachers, and the infrastructure of schools and universities are suffering severe damage as a result of the ongoing aggression, which constitutes a flagrant violation of international conventions.
The statement indicated that, since nearly two years ago, more than 830 teachers and 193 academics and scientists have been martyred in Gaza, and more than 196,197 teachers have been affected by the interruption of salaries in Yemen.
It stated that the number of students killed in Gaza since the beginning of the aggression has reached more than 13,500, with more than 17,244 injured. More than 785,000 students are deprived of education, and 95% of schools have been destroyed.
The statement revealed that 95% of the schools and universities destroyed by the Israeli occupation are out of service in Gaza. Meanwhile, the number of educational facilities completely or partially destroyed, used to shelter displaced persons, and unsafe in Yemen reached 3,768, representing approximately 11.5% of the total. 435 schools were completely destroyed, and 42%, or 1,578 schools, were partially damaged by the aggression. 26.5%, or 999 schools, were used as shelters for displaced persons, with 20%, or 756 schools, closed across the country.
The statement emphasized that these crimes constitute a serious violation of international humanitarian law and international human rights law, particularly with regard to the protection of education and educational institutions.
The organization held the Israeli occupation and the Saudi-American coalition fully responsible for all crimes targeting civilians, teachers, and the educational process.
The organization also held the United Nations, the Security Council, and Arab and Islamic countries responsible for their silence and dereliction of duty, stressing that this inaction constitutes a green light for the continued commission of war crimes against civilians in Palestine and Yemen.
The organization called on all human rights and humanitarian organizations, and all honorable and free people around the world, to take immediate action and assume their moral and humanitarian responsibilities in supporting the Palestinian and Yemeni peoples, condemning the horrific crimes being committed, and pressuring the United Nations, specifically the Security Council, to fulfill their legal and moral duty to protect civilians and halt this deliberate aggression that threatens the future of entire generations.
