Entesaf Condemns Saudi Aggression Crimes Targeting Prisoners and Civilians in Al-Jawf Governorate
Entesaf Organization for Women and Child Rights strongly condemns the ongoing Saudi aggression crimes in Al-Jawf Governorate, which have targeted civilians and prisoners and resulted in the killing and injury of several people, including women and children, in grave violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law.
According to information received from local and health sources, Saudi aggression airstrikes targeted a civilian home in the Al-Batin area of Al-Hazm District, killing a mother and her child and injuring her husband and two other children. The attack struck a civilian family inside their home, highlighting the serious risks faced by civilians, particularly women and children.
The Saudi aggression also targeted a prison holding a number of prisoners in the city of Al-Hazm, Al-Jawf Governorate, killing nine prisoners. This serious incident requires investigation and accountability, particularly as persons deprived of their liberty are afforded legal protection and their lives and physical integrity must be safeguarded against attacks and inhumane treatment.
Entesaf Organization stresses that targeting civilians and civilian objects, as well as targeting detention facilities holding persons deprived of their liberty, or conducting attacks without adequately respecting the principle of distinction between civilians and military objectives, constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law and requires an independent and transparent investigation into the circumstances of these attacks.
The organization warns of the grave humanitarian consequences of these crimes for families and civilians in Al-Jawf Governorate, including death, injury, fear, and suffering, as well as the psychological and social harm inflicted upon women and children.
Entesaf Organization calls on the United Nations and relevant international human rights mechanisms to open an independent and transparent investigation into the targeting of the civilian home and the prison in Al-Hazm District, document the circumstances surrounding the attacks, ensure accountability for any violations of international law, provide redress to victims, and ensure reparations for the harm suffered by them and their families.
The organization also calls on the international community to fulfill its legal and humanitarian responsibilities to protect civilians and persons deprived of their liberty, particularly women and children, and to work toward ending attacks that place their lives at risk and preventing the recurrence of such violations.
Entesaf Organization reiterates that the protection of civilians and prisoners, particularly women and children, is both a legal and humanitarian responsibility, and that ensuring their safety and holding those responsible for violations accountable are urgent necessities for protecting human rights and preventing impunity.
